Highlights from 1-week in Marrrakech + the Sahara Dessert

Eat:

  • Drink a cup of Moroccan mint tea anywhere and everywhere
  • Tagine anywhere and everywhere as well! Tagine is actually the name of the pot in which these Moroccan dishes are cooked. Tagines are slow-cooked stews with meat/poultry/fish, veggies and lots of spices
  • Henna Art Cafe for spiced turkey kebabs  with caramelized pumpkin in a gorgeous and adorable setting
  • Munch on grilled corn from a street vendor
  • Outdoor market in the Medina for veggies brochettes (kebabs)

Don’t Miss:

  • Take a multi-day trip to the Sahara Dessert! I took this budget 3-day tour where we visited the famous Ait Ben Haddou (used in movies + fashion mags as a back drop!!), Ouarzazate (aka the Gate of the Sahara), Boumalne Dades, Todgha gorges, and of course the Sahara. The highlight was the 2-hour camel trek to the Berber campsite in the desert where we stopped halfway through to watch the sunset, and then slept under the stars of the Sahara sky (!!)
  • Wander around the souks (the maze of markets in the Medina) and try not the get lost
  • Experience the Medina at night
  • Take a day trip to Ouzoud waterfalls and take a hike/walk along the falls to enjoy the gorgeous views
  • Take a day trip to Essaouira, a picturesque coastal town
